PrintONorgans – Engineering Bioinks and Processes for Direct Printing on Organs

Project name: PrintONorgans – Engineering Bioinks and Processes for Direct Printing on Organs

Code: POCI-01-0247-FEDER-033877

Main objective: This project seeks to bring these technologies, currently used in laboratory settings, into the hospital environment, developing and implementing a pioneering and innovative procedure for the customized repair of different human tissues. Its implementation will involve the development of equipment capable of printing materials, combined or not with cells/drugs/growth factors, directly onto the damaged area.
The concept involves using reverse engineering technologies to visualize and detect damage or problems in tissues or organs, and three-dimensional (3D) computer reconstruction of the damaged area. This reconstruction will need to be carried out using specially developed software. The software developed will not only enable 3D reconstruction, but will also serve as an interface for the doctor to define the robot's area of operation, as well as defining specific zones for the placement of different materials, cells or drugs. According to the specifications defined in the software, the developed robot will properly deposit the materials. To guarantee the robot's precision and control, it will incorporate different sensors (e.g. proximity, temperature, pressure). In order to validate the entire procedure, as well as the robot's precision and performance, in vitro (mannequins) and in vivo (animals) tests will be carried out.
